Zifeng Zang
Traveling in Memory, 2024
Acrylic on canvas
40 x 43"

Artist Statement
Created in 2022, this painting explores memory as a fluid, unfolding experience rather than a fixed image. I applied handmade high-fluid acrylics directly onto raw canvas, allowing pigments to soak, spread, and collide organically. This process invites dynamic color interactions and embraces unexpected results, echoing the way memories surface, overlap, and transform over time.

Lines move through the composition as guiding forces-directing gestural energy across the surface. These linear gestures lead the eye through splashes of paint and layered color fields, creating a sense of posture, motion, and embodied presence. The interplay between deliberate line work and spontaneous flows reflects the tension between intention and chance, control and release.

Rather than depicting a specific moment, the work evokes the emotional residue of memory-how fragments remain, shift, and reassemble through sensation, movement, and color.

Artist Bio
As an abstract painter rooted in Philadelphia, I bring a wealth of education and experience to my craft. My love for art began at a young age and flourished as I pursued formal education, earning dual BFA degrees from Jilin University in China and West Chester University of Pennsylvania.

My career includes serving as a senior graphic designer and brand manager at 4A advertising agencies and tech giants in China, where I honed my skills in creating imagery, characters, and advertisement scripts using digital tools. Despite this, I always felt drawn to the traditional art of painting. This passion led me to further my education in the field and study painting in the US, where I am now focused on developing my abstract style, infused with my personal experiences and unique perspective.

I am a member of the Muse Gallery in Philadelphia and recently completed a one-year artist residency at the Delaware Contemporary Museum in 2024.
