Tremain Smith
The World, 2022
Oil and beeswax on panel
23 x 24 x 2"

Artist Statement
I use my skills as an artist to facilitate healing, personal and collective. My desire is to make compelling works of art that create access to spirit. The paintings are expressions of what is within and the mysteries I find when I let what is inside come out. The lines, shapes and colors are mappings of the unseen as I visually discover internal landscapes. I explore and heal through the language of painting. I make art with deep engagement with the physical materials, which come from the earth. The technique I use in my paintings is composed of layers of oil glazes, collage, and transparent beeswax on panel.

Artist Bio
Tremain Smith is an artist living and working in Philadelphia. Her work is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, among other public and private collections across the country. In her three-decade career, she has exhibited widely across the US and her work has been reviewed extensively in major publications, including journals on encaustic painting, the technique for which she is known. Her paintings are composed of layers of oil glazes, collaged elements, and transparent beeswax. Her works on paper are made with a hand-ground recipe using pigments she often forages locally.

Tremain's concerns center on art and healing. Her abstract works are mappings of inner landscapes. She responds to her paintings with writing, following a creative process that combines painting and poetry. She explores, discovers, and heals through both languages.

Tremain is currently applying her skills as an artist in spaces of collective healing through restorative and trauma-responsive practices. She completed a certificate in Behavioral Health & Human Services at Community College of Philadelphia in 2024 and will complete one in Restorative Justice in 2026. You are welcome to visit her in her West Philadelphia studio.
