Oil pastel on paper

Artist Statement
My abstract color series explores the feelings and emotions generated by color. These paintings use color to evoke a passionate and uplifting feeling. For me, the many shades of warm and other passionate colors serves to energize and transport me to a better place. Each painting is done in a unique color to evoke a slightly different emotion. Circles, squares, lines and other marks float in space, perhaps suggesting a happy time and place.

What is especially interesting in this series, in addition to the color, is the creation of space in each painting. Some images and marks are created by cutting back into earlier layers of paint. Using a palette knife, I cut into the surface and create various marks and gestures. Some other marks are on the surface of the painting. This creates a 3-dimensional feel to the painting with some marks popping and some receding. Visual interest is also created by using images of various sizes - some big and others small, creating a lot of movement in the work.

The paintings are oil pastel on paper. Oil pastel provides one of the most intense colorations of all mediums. It was created for Picasso in the 1940s. Each of my painting is done with many layers of oil pastel, developing a thick and creamy surface. The paper is thick with deckled edges to provide additional visual interest. I think of my work as passionate, uplifting, and full of movement.
