Brian david Dennis
Purge No.3883, 2024
Mixed media collage
40-1/8 x 10-3/4" (framed)

This artwork was exhibited as part of A Quiet Roar, InLiquid at the Hyatt.

Artist Statement
The collage is a non-objective geometric composition. Unintentionally, it resembles to Cubist musical instruments. Strong vertical line dominant the piece. They are reinforced by a faint horizontal pattern.

This series, "Purge" began as a studio cleanup, aka The Great Purge.

My place was littered with piles of collage materials. Some were found objects but most were things I made. They were never used for various reasons: time, stumped or fear (of failure).

As I began digging through them, I rediscovered the precious gems I had squired away. My imagination was reignited, and I was entranced by their possibilities again. This was an opportunity I couldn't pass on.

A mess will wait, but inspiration must be seized!

Artist Bio
Brian David Dennis (b. 1959) is a Philadelphia-based artist working in collage, assemblage, and installation. Raised in a home designed by his father with movable walls, he developed an early fascination with space, structure, and transformation-ideas that continue to inform his work. Encouraged by his mother, a kindergarten teacher, Brian's childhood was shaped by free thinking and hands-on building.

He studied drawing and painting at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts before turning to collage and assemblage, and later installation, often incorporating the exhibition site as an integral part of the work. A longtime Philadelphia resident, he has exhibited widely, including with Vox Populi, the Philadelphia Art Alliance, and Sande Webster Gallery. His honors include an Independence Foundation Fellowship and a 2016 commission from Longwood Gardens.
