Ancient Greek Silver Coin Necklace
Ancient Greek coins are renowned for the detailed beauty, but none more so than from the city of Taras nestled in the heel of Italy's boot. This remarkable coin, known as a didrachm, depicts a rider and a horse; and on the obverse a boy riding a dolphin.
There are two stories about who the boy on the dolphin is. The popular theory is that it is Phalantus, the founder of Taras. The second is that the boy is Taras, son of the sea god Poseidon, who sent a dolphin to save him from drowning.
The didrachm was minted between 281-240 BC and has been transformed into a pendant, hung on a sterling silver chain and bezel.
