Step into the enigmatic world of Paul Sattler with "The Magic Skin," an original watercolor on paper measuring 22 3/8 x 19 3/8 inches (framed).
Sattler's imaginative paintings and drawings feature multiple characters engaged in ambiguous narratives that unfold like theatrical scenes. Drawing inspiration from surrealism, color theory, folklore, and literary sources - including Grimm Brothers tales, E.T.A. Hoffmann, and the writings of Balzac, Poe, Hermann Hesse, and James Joyce - his loose brushwork and vivid hues invite viewers to question their own reality.
Animals play a central role in Sattler's work, serving as beasts of burden, mythical beings, and stand-ins for human emotions, predicaments, and phobias. While avoiding the moralizing lessons of traditional fables, his narratives weave personalized imagery inspired by the vast legacy of children's literature and the charged presence of animals in adult fiction.
An MFA graduate of Indiana University and BFA graduate of the Art Institute of Chicago, Sattler is represented by Momentum Gallery in Asheville, North Carolina. His work reimagines historical paintings through an unmistakably contemporary lens.
