You are bidding on a sail for six on the ferry sloop Woody Guthrie. You and your five guests will join Captain Steve Schwartz and the crew of the Woody for a sail on Newburgh Bay. Learn about sailing the river and its environs from the Beacon Sloop Club's knowledgeable crew, or just relax and enjoy the beautiful Hudson!
The sail will depart from Beacon and feature views of Dennings Point, Bannerman's Island and Castle, Storm King Mountain, and the gateway to the Hudson Highlands.
The Woody Guthrie is a replica of a popular gaff-rigged Hudson River sloop from the days of yore. It is owned and operated by the Beacon Sloop Club, offering educational sails five evenings a week.
Built for Pete Seeger in 1978 by the Bearsville Woodworking Cooperative, she was designed by Cy Hamlin at approximately 1/3 of the size of the Clearwater. Named in honor of his friend and folk legend Woody Guthrie, the Woody embodies Pete's vision of local community access and involvement in the Hudson River.
Captain Steve Schwartz has been sailing on the Woody since 1978. He was trained by Pete Seeger and Alan Anapu (1st Clearwater Captain) and is licensed by the Coast Guard to sail a 100-ton vessel. Steve is an adjunct professor of sailing at Marist College and is knowledgeable about all things Hudson River.
