It seems fitting that even the question mark's etymology is a mystery. At Meeting for Worship, we initiate our collective silence with a query: a question is introduced into the room not as something to be solved or answered quickly, but as a prompt to go inwards, together. And it can seem like children offer the best questions: who was the first ever human being? Did they have a mama? Why do some people not have homes? Does infinite ever end? Why do grown ups get to do whatever they want? Maybe questions are not meant to be answered resolutely, but are instead an attempt to draw closer to truth, a way to feel connected to something beyond our individual selves. Questions are an opening: they unravel an endless line of inquiry; they are the essence of philosophy, and the invention of the human mind. Are humans the question mark of the universe? Can we learn how to be stewards of life on earth? Can we accept that some questions are unanswerable?
