Title: What the Light Passed On

Description:

During the High School Odyssey trip, students traveled to the Davis Mountains in West Texas where they learned about the rich history of the location and how the land has been used throughout the centuries. Soaking in the location and landscape, they became aware of how stories have been passed down, such as the stories told by mouth, in writing, and through cave art-or the stories that the land passes down while being continuously reshaped by natural and man-made causes. They were struck by the stunning beauty of the West Texas sunsets painted on the larger-than-life sky, which has been shared by all who have inhabited the area.

These unique experiences inspired this piece of parametric wall art. Using a 3D CAD software called Fusion, students designed various overlapping bodies that were then cut into the layers you see. The fluid forms mimic the way nature has molded the land over the decades and centuries, while the purpleheart, padauk, and maple woods recall the colors in the sunset and the paints used by the indigenous peoples to craft their cave art.
