Jenni Ahtiainen is a Finnish fashion designer who had designed stage costumes for artists including Marilyn Manson, Snoop Dogg, and Bono. Then she got her hearing aids. Her first reaction was shock. She was going to be living with hearing devices for the rest of her life. She looked at eyeglasses and thought: if you have bad eyesight you can choose frames that suit your style. But if you have bad hearing, you are stuck with the same medical-looking machines forever.

She innovated a small holster around the hearing aids and hung leather strips into the holster. Suddenly the hearing aids felt more like her. They looked like her. And she looked like herself. That is how DEAFMETAL was born.

Jen Aslin, a US audiologist, discovered DEAFMETAL in 2020 and knew immediately that bringing it to America was the right thing to do. Together, Jenni and Jen built DeafMetalUSA, dedicated to reducing the stigma of hearing loss through jewelry that is beautiful, functional, and unapologetically visible.
