The Cecil, named Esquire's Best New Restaurant in America, was New York City's first Afro-Asian-American restaurant. More recently, Smalls established Alkebulan, the world's first African dining hall in Dubai.

His past restaurants, Cafe Beulah, Sweet Ophelia's and Shoebox Cafe, left an indelible mark on the next generation of chefs.
