Hand-blown glass cups from the Niijima Glass Art Center (or Niijima Glass Art Museum) are recognized for their unique olive-green color, derived from 100% volcanic koga stone found only on Niijima Island and Lipari Island, Italy.
- Made from 100% koga stone (biotite rhyolite), providing a distinctive olive-green color.
- Technique: Often features the Tsukime style, where the inside of the hot, blown glass is poked outwards, creating small "spines" that offer a comfortable grip, resembling a turbo sazae seashell.
- Appearance: Each piece is handmade by a local artisan, resulting in slight variations in shape and size.
- Origins: Created by Niijima native artist Osamu Noda, who established the Niijima Glass Art Center in 1987.
In Japanese the number 4 is pronounced similar to the word for death so it is considered unlucky or "not the done thing" to buy or give gifts in sets of 4 so that is why it is a set of 3. Museum brochures included.
