Swallowtail Class
Inspired by a butterfly card, the Swallowtails classroom worked together to design a garden that reflects the sense of home and community both children and adults feel when they enter our classroom.
To begin, the children created an impressionistic garden background by moving different shades of green, blue, and white paint beneath a layer of plastic wrap using their hands. This process allowed them to explore color and movement while blending the paints together. A ball of foil was then dabbed over the surface to spread the paint further and add texture to the garden scene.
Next, the children painted papers in three different shades of yellow, which were later used to punch out butterfly shapes. They carefully added touches of black to the butterflies to bring them to life. Additional papers were painted in shades of green and cut into circular leaves. Cotton swabs were used to create colorful flowers throughout the garden, creating floral details.
Finally, all of the cutouts were collaged onto the painted background. The result is a warm and vibrant masterpiece that beautifully represents our classroom community and the creativity of the Swallowtails children.
