Douglas Gilbert, b.1967.
Douglas Gilbert's ongoing exploration of the dynamic intersection of abstraction, figuration, and expressionism, marked by a visceral energy that is both sensual and electric. Drawing upon a wide range of influences including the natural world, quantum physics, mythology, and the intricacies of the human experience. His aim, to create visual experiences that resonate on both emotional and intellectual levels.
Central to his practice is a labor-intensive technique involving the layering of thousands
of straight lines. These lines, though seemingly chaotic, coalesce into forms that pulse with life and depth. The visible mark-making becomes a kind of visual texture inviting the viewer to engage closely, to lose themselves in the rhythm of the composition, and to discover meaning in the interplay of structure and spontaneity.
Gilbert began drawing and painting at an early age, selling original works well before realizing it would become his life's passion. He earned both a BFA in painting and a BA in Art History from Cornell University and, fascinated by computer graphics, spent much of his early career as a graphic designer. Drawing, however, has always been an integral part of his practice. His decision to return to fine art, specifically pencil on paper, reflects his desire to highlight the medium's relevance in today's technology-filled galleries. He has exhibited in both solo and group juried shows, earning 2nd place for his piece Tree with Shadow at the Spencertown Academy Art Center's juried exhibition, Homes, Hamlets & Villages.
