It takes one woman a few weeks to stitch a quilt. They are paid $50, which is a lot of money in Nepal. The rest of the proceeds will pay for a low-caste Indian refugee beggar child to attend private school in Kathmandu for one year.
In exchange fort having their tuition paid, the children and parents must promise that the kids won't beg anymore.
More details and stories of people impacted can be found at quiltsforkidsproject.com.
The quilt is imperfect because it is hand-sewn in the beggars' camp, using scraps and other cheaply sourced materials.
The maroon backing fabric is the same fabric used for monks' robes (because the monks donate their scraps). The quilt fits a double or queen-sized mattress.
