This ten-hour course covers five key topics: avalanche and weather forecast comprehension and application, pre-trip planning, terrain identification, snowpack observations and basic snow science, and avalanche rescue.

This course is for motorized riders ready for their first on-snow avalanche class and for experienced riders, looking for a refresh.

Avalanche & Weather Forecast

Comprehend the language and vocabulary surrounding an avalanche forecast and the backcountry.

Learn how to interpret and apply information provided in a daily avalanche and weather forecasts to planning.
Understand what pieces of information are vital for planning a day in the mountains.

Pre-Trip and Preparedness

Ability to interpret and apply avalanche and weather forecasts to trip plans.
Understand what tools are available for backcountry navigation, and how and when to use them.

Learn what equipment is essential, and suggested for a successful day in the mountains and how to manage that equipment and resources.

Terrain Identification

Practice the basic skills of single companion avalanche rescue including the transceiver search, systematic probing, and strategic shoveling.

Learn how to identify terrain where avalanches are possible, and terrain where they are not.
Understand the significance of slope angle and how to measure it.
Identify characteristics of terrain such as avalanche paths, terrain traps, consequences, and islands of safety.
