Only 51% of youth in America read proficiently, and this number drops dramatically in underserved areas. By backing fun, educational programs that meet students where they are, we are helping kids meet their full potential.
In September, the St. Brown Foundation launched a brand-new partnership with Rhymes With Reason, a music-powered approach to closing the vocabulary and reading gap.
At the Detroit launch event, Rhymes with Reason founder Austin Martin led 100 middle schoolers at Durfee Elementary-Middle School through an interactive workshop where they learned new vocabulary by connecting with the music they already love. The students got a surprise video message from Amon-Ra himself, and the energy in the room showed just how powerful this approach can be when literacy feels fun, fresh, and relevant.
This partnership is the beginning of something bigger. With your support, we aim to expand Rhymes with Reason to even more students in the coming year.
Detroit is officially on the map. Stay tuned - we're just getting started!
