Richmond 34 member and community ambassador, Elizabeth Johnson Rice, awarding the Richmond 34 Legacy Scholarship to winner Zaria Wortham, during the 2023 Richmond 34 Legacy Weekend at The Diamond.

This year's jersey design was inspired by Elizabeth Johnson Rice, a member of the Richmond 34, who serves as a community ambassador for the Flying Squirrels to collaborate on educational & community outreach programs to tell the story of the Richmond 34.

In her favorite color, purple, the jersey features her "LJAG" logo standing for Love, Joy, Abundance & Gratitude, which she strives to live by every day and inspire others to do the same. "LJAG attitude is the key to breaking barriers, stigmas, misconceptions, and combating racism on personal levels." - Ambassador Elizabeth Johnson Rice

During Richmond 34 Legacy Weekend presented by Capital One, the Flying Squirrels will wear these special Richmond 34 jerseys, which will be auctioned off with proceeds going to Flying Squirrels Charities & the Richmond 34 Legacy Scholarship Fund.

 About the Richmond 34 Legacy Weekend:

On February 22, 1960, 34 Virginia Union University students were arrested following a peaceful sit-in protest at the whites-only lunch counter of Thalhimers Department Store in downtown Richmond. The "Richmond 34" sit-in ultimately led to the integration of Thalhimers and influenced legislation in the Civil Rights Act of 1964. 
The Flying Squirrels began hosting a two-day "Richmond 34 Legacy Weekend" in 2021 to celebrate the contributions of the Richmond 34 to the Civil Rights Movement as well as other local leaders both past and present who have made contributions in the push for social justice and racial equality.
