Poppy the Pygmy Hippo at Metro Richmond Zoo

Hippo hooray! Introducing Poppy, the zoo's most adorable addition to our animal family.

She was born on December 9, 2024, to parents Iris and Corwin, and she can now be seen daily at the zoo with mom. Pygmy hippos are endangered, so this birth is important! Poppy is America's pygmy hippo princess. She's raising awareness for her species by stealing hearts on the internet across the world.

Proceeds from the jersey auction will benefit Fauna & Flora through partnership with the Richmond Metro Zoo.

Every species on Earth plays a unique role. Fauna & Flora works with local partners worldwide to protect the extraordinary species we all rely on. Including pygmy hippos like Poppy! Confined to a dwindling number of suitable sites in West Africa, pygmy hippos continue to decline dramatically in number, due mainly to habitat loss and hunting.

Small, shy, and secretive - the timid pygmy hippo prefers to flee rather than fight. But they cannot escape the enormous dangers imposed by humans day after day after day.  Pygmy hippos are officially recognized as endangered, and unless we act now, there is an imminent threat that we could soon lose them forever.

Fauna & Flora's central goal of the new ten-year pygmy hippo conservation strategy is to secure connectivity between all known populations of the species.  Our work to protect the reclusive and neglected pygmy hippo is an integral part of Fauna & Flora's wider conservation efforts to safeguard threatened species and habitats across our project sites in West Africa, which are vital for biodiversity and for the future of our planet.

For more than 120 years, Fauna & Flora has been working with its partners around the world to protect threatened plant and animal species. Every year, our people work across hundreds of project sites, currently in well over 40 countries, to protect the species that are in most urgent need of our help, including critically endangered species.
