9Heath Aster (Symphyotrichum ericoides) (3" pot)
Heath or White Heath Aster is known for thriving in the driest sand and gravel soils where little else will grow. With its narrow, upright stems covered with distinctive small glossy green, needle-like leaves, the plant resembles heather. It likes full sun and grows from 1' to 3' high. Heath Aster is a great addition to the fall garden as it produces a blizzard of small white flowers from August to October. It is a host plant for the Pearl Crescent butterfly and the Wavy-Lined Emerald moth, a good source of nectar for late season pollinators, and its seeds provide food for birds, especially wild turkeys. Heath Aster was widely use for medicinal purposes by Native Americans. Its leaves and flowers were used in herbal steam baths, brewed to sooth respiratory and digestive issues, and to revive unconscious patients.
