6American Plum (Prunus americana) (2qt.)
The American or Wild Plum a native small tree that can also grow as a multi-stemmed spreading shrub. Aromatic clusters of white flowers bloom in early spring, followed by edible red plums with yellow pulp which ripen in August or September. The nectar and fruit provide food sources for butterflies, bees, and birds. The fruits are about one inch in diameter and while the skin is thick and tart the flesh is very sweet. The fruit is eaten fresh and also made into jellies, jam and wine. Fall foliage ranges from electric red to pale yellow. Deer, quail, grouse, and pheasant love to eat the plum fruit and the plant is important to songbirds for nesting. In addition to eating the fruit, Native Americans used various parts of the American Plum for medicinal purposes.
