Aid Station

by Robert Benney

This compelling work by Robert Benney captures the quiet courage and urgency of frontline medical care during wartime. Best known as a World War II war artist-correspondent, Benney was commissioned in 1943 and 1944 to document U.S. Naval Aviation and the Army Medical Department in the South Pacific, including the invasion of Saipan. Aid Station reflects that firsthand experience-offering a powerful, human glimpse into the realities of military service.

Born in Romania in 1904 and raised in New York City, Benney trained at Cooper Union and the National Academy of Art before launching a successful career as a commercial illustrator. Yet it was his work embedded with American forces-in World War II, later with the U.S. Air Force in North Africa, and with the Marines in Vietnam-that defined his legacy.

Benney's works are held in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian Institution, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the Dallas Museum of Fine Arts, and The Society of Illustrators, as well as in collections across the Armed Services.

AID STATION is more than an original artwork-it is a moving historical record by an artist who stood alongside those who served, preserving their stories through his art.
