STEVE JOY is a painter living in Omaha, Nebraska. He makes paintings that are inspired by medieval techniques such as gold leaf, varnishes, beeswax, inks, and artists's oils. He is the recipient of numerous awards and fellowships, including the Monbusho Japanese Fellowship, 1981. Teaching experience includes: Professorships at Universities of Trondheim and Bergen in Norway and Ecole Regionale des Beaux Arts Caen, France. Joy earned a BA (hons) from Exeter College of Art England, an MFA from Chelsea School of Art, London, and an MFA from Kyoto University of Arts.

Joy was a Bemis Center artist-in-resident in 1997-98 and Bemis Curator 1998-99. Museum exhibitions include: a career retrospective, Uncreated Light, at Joslyn Museum, Omaha 2008; a retrospective at Sioux City Arts Centre, 2018; Serpentine Gallery, London, UK; and Bergen Kuntsforening, Drammen and Haugesund Museum, Norway. Omaha-area commissions include: HDR Headquarters; Orpheum Theatre Lounge; April Sampson Cancer Center, Lincoln; Saint Mary Margaret Church, Omaha; and Saint Bartholomew Church, Omaha.


Artist-in-Residence, 1997
