LELA SHAHRZAD WELCH is a sculptor and performance artist living in Los Osos, California. Her practice is a seeking of a culture rather than a participant, creating metal "tapestries" inspired by Persian myths, autobody DIY culture, and weaving. Using CNC fabrication with finishes including silkscreen, photo emulsion, and powder coating, her work considers the limitations of a primary source. Welch has exhibited throughout California with an upcoming solo show at the San Luis Obispo Museum of Art (CA) in 2026. She was recently in the Summer 2025 cohort at Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts. Welch received their MFA at the University of California, Santa Barbara, under the esteemed Chancellor's Fellowship, as a Ron Newby Fellow, a Mind and Machine Intelligence award winner and as the 2024-2025 Post MFA Artist-in-Residence Fellow. Welch is currently a Lecturer in the Art and Design department at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo.
