Caring Heart Award
Every year at the Fore the Macs: Playing it Forward Golf Outing, we honor an alumna or organization with the Caring Heart Award at the After Par-Tee.
In 2017, Mother McAuley established this award in tribute to Caroline Griffin '12. Caroline was a member of the McAuley golf team. She also was a heart transplant recipient who never let her congenital heart condition get in the way of enjoying life. While a sophomore at St. Ambrose University in Davenport, Iowa, Caroline passed away as a result of ongoing heart issues.
We are proud to announce that this year's Caring Heart Award was presented to the Tom Hopkins Foundation.
About the Tom Hopkins Foundation

Tom "Papa Hops" Hopkins was larger-than-life with a big, "caring heart." He always took care of others, by volunteering his time in the community and local schools as a coach, referee and mentor to the children living on the southside.
At age 23, Tom was diagnosed with melanoma. Thirty years after remission, his cancer returned. Tom never lost hope and fought every day with a positive attitude and the right mindset to beat cancer. After his passing, his four children - Liam, Martin, Tommy and Annie '13 - wanted to continue the legacy he instilled in them: to give back and help others.
They established the Tom Hopkins Foundation in the summer of 2014 in honor of their Dad. The 1st Annual Papa Hops 16" Softball Tournament was held at Kennedy Park with 16 participating teams playing into the night under rented lights. Today, the foundation has grown tremendously. The tournament now features 32 teams across three community parks, and is supported by thousands of people united for a great cause.
Funds raised support the foundation's mission to help families who have been affected by cancer and to assist local youth athletics. Over the past 11 years, more than $1 million has been raised, assisting over 95 families and 10 local Catholic school athletic departments. Most recently, the foundation partnered with the Southside Catholic Conference to host 8th-grade All Star games in boys' football and both boys' and girls' basketball and volleyball.
Papa Hops truly loved life, living each day to the fullest and always inspiring his family and friends to do the same. A proud supporter of youth athletics and a determined fighter of cancer, his spirit lives on through the foundation.
