This photograph is considered one of Ansel Adams finest works, showcasing his mastery of chiaroscuro-the contrast between light and shadow He captured Winter Sunrise, Sierra Nevada, From Lone Pine in 1944, during a frigid morning when he was photographing the Manzanar relocation camp2. He had spent several days waiting for the perfect sunrise, battling heavy cloud cover before finally witnessing the dramatic interplay of light and shadow he had envisioned,

The foreground of the image features a pasture with a lone horse, which Adams had been frustrated with its standing away from the camera until the very last moment, when it turned just in time for the exposure.
