Rosa Parks was a civil rights activist, best known for her role in the 1955 Montgomery bus boycott where she refused to give up her seat on a segregated bus. The protest led to the desegregation of public transportation and her actions were a turning point in the American civil rights movement leading her to being called "the mother of the civil rights movement". Parks was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the Congressional Gold Medal, and was named by Time Magazine as one of "The 20 Most Influential People of the 20th Century".
