Ed Dwight is honored as the first African American to be trained as an astronaut after being selected by the Kennedy Administration in 1962. He resigned in 1966, never having gone into space. In 1977, he received a Master of Fine Arts as a sculptor. Dwight has sculpted celebratory African American art, including International Monuments to the Underground Railroad and a Dr. Martin Luther King Memorial to name a few. At the age of 90, Dwight finally reached space in May 2024. His story is featured in the National Geographic documentary "Space Race".
