Stunning Vase
Ronald McDonald House Jill Ruschulte is proud to donate one of her beautiful ceramic pieces to our auction! Read what she has to say about her process for creating this vase.
"When I'm not cooking for our guest families and guiding the terrific volunteers who help us in the Taste Of Hope Kitchen, I love to get my hands dirty making functional and decorative ceramics.
I created this vase by combining wheel throwing and hand building techniques. Standing 14.5 inches tall and 6.25 inch at the widest point the vase went through two firing processes. The first transforming the raw clay to ceramic, the second for the glazing.
The first layer of glaze is tenmoku and is dark Mahogany in color. Over top is blue rutile creating contrasting cream and blue hues. After the glaze was applied the vase was placed in a gas fueled reduction kiln and reached a temperature of approximately 2400 degrees Fahrenheit. This type of atmospheric firing influences the glazes meaning there are always variations in the end results. While many of my pieces share similarities, since they are handmade, no two are ever exactly the same."
