This striking photograph captures the vibrant energy of the Metaxourgeio Carnival in Athens, Greece, on March 3, 2019. Taken on Megalou Alexandrou Street, the image showcases two costumed participants blending tradition with contemporary expression. Dressed in a bold, drag-inspired interpretation of the iconic Evzone uniform-complete with pleated skirts, tasseled garters, and red high heels-the subjects embody the carnival's spirit of celebration, resistance, and artistic freedom. Their dramatic makeup and confident poses contrast beautifully against the urban backdrop of graffiti-covered walls and layered posters, reflecting the creative and rebellious essence of Metaxourgeio, one of Athens' most dynamic neighborhoods.
Photographed by Dimitris Polymenopoulos, this piece offers a unique glimpse into modern Greek cultural expression, making it a standout addition to any collection.
