Yvonne Cheng (born 1941) is a celebrated artist whose work captures the beauty and culture of Hawaiian and Polynesian life. After moving to Hawaii in 1967, she began studying batik at the Bishop Museum, a medium that shaped her artistic expression for over two decades. Her batik pieces, renowned for their vivid and elegant depictions of Hawaiian women, are considered iconic in the realm of Hawaiian art.
Cheng later expanded her repertoire to include oil and acrylic on canvas, as well as watercolors and pen and ink. Initially, her subjects were adorned in traditional kapa garments, but she gradually incorporated contemporary Polynesian aesthetics by using Tahitian textiles. Her compositions often feature lush tropical backdrops inspired by the natural beauty surrounding her studio in Palolo Valley, Oahu.
Known for her large-scale commissioned murals, Cheng's works grace prominent locations, including the Hilton Hawaiian Village Kalia Tower, Mariposa restaurant at Neiman Marcus, the Grand Wailea Resort on Maui, and the Hawai'i State Art Museum. Her art stands as a tribute to Hawaii's cultural richness and the enduring spirit of its people.
