The name of the shoe is La Danseuse (French for the dancer) and incorporates a visual excerpt from Edgar Degas' painting "The Star" painted in 1878. Degas, a quintessential member of the impressionist period, is well known for his paintings and chalk drawings that capture the essence of ballet and ballet dancers. His painterly style captures the grace and elegance of ballet dancing from rehearsals to the stage.

Since I have grown up in a family of artists, and have been an art educator for nearly 30 years, I immediately knew I wanted to use Degas somehow in my shoe. To me, his work is synonymous with ballet. I tried to capture the painterly impressionist quality in my dancer and left the rest of the show alone so she stands alone as the "Star". I also think leaving the exposed ballet pink satin and the structure of the shoe pays homage to the beauty of the shoes themselves. I replaced the traditional pink ribbons with black to mirror the flowing black ribbon around the dancer's neck.
