Rowen's family doctor noticed that he had cafe au lait spots at his two year well child appointment and we kept an eye on him. We did do some ophthalmology appointments looking for lisch nodes and everything came back negative. At Rowen's four year well child appointment his doctor noticed he had early onset scoliosis and referred us to the University of Iowa. When there for scoliosis Rowen's mom asked for a referral to their genetics department. A few months after turning four Rowen was officially diagnosed with NF1. So far Rowen has needed speech therapy and occupational therapy. However, he is thriving in first grade and loves math and reading. His ADHD and anxiety can get the best of him sometimes, but he has a great team to help keep him moving forward. Rowen has recently developed some neurofibromas on his neck, but that hasn't stopped him from being his silly, rambunctious self. Rowen wants to be a construction worker when he grows up so he drew a picture of a tall building he hopes to help build someday. Right now he really enjoys using legos to build and that is his second picture. Rowen's third picture is him playing soccer. He has found a great love for soccer where he is the best teammate and smiles the whole time he's playing.
