Materials: acrylic paint, colored pencil, pine wood, pom-poms, glitter, plastic beads, glue. Special Features/Artist Statement: My goal with this piece was to juxtapose Western and non-Western ideas of queerness in performance art. One side of the egg is painted in the style of a kabuki mask, because Kabuki theater is a notable example of gender nonconformity in Japanese culture. The mask depicts a fox face representing cleverness and wit, with the added color of green representing growth and rebirth. This is contrasted with the face of Chappell Roan on the other side, a famous lesbian pop artist whose aesthetic has brought drag culture into the mainstream and cemented Western queer culture as part of art history.
