Beautiful artwork collaboration created by Amy Terry and Arkansas Children's patient MacKenzie, age 18.
ABOUT MACKENZIE
MacKenzie was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a type of cancer, at age 14. Two years later, she was diagnosed with heart failure. MacKenzie has spent nearly 300 days and nights at Arkansas Children's, where she received chemotherapy treatments as well as multiple surgeries, including, ultimately, a heart transplant. About halfway through her cancer treatment, she began receiving chemo at Arkansas Children's Northwest (ACNW), which meant care close to home! Her mother shared that during one of her extended ACNW stays, her nurses helped decorate her hospital room, brought her fun gifts, and always came in dancing to help cheer her up. MacKenzie is very determined - once she has an idea or a goal, she makes a plan and goes for it! She loves writing, watching TV shows and being an advocate. She's a high school senior and plans to attend college to become a nurse. Her dream job would be to work in ACH or ACNW.
ABOUT THE ART - "Resilience"
This piece depicts MacKenzie's story of overcoming a mountain of health obstacles including a heart transplant. While her medical needs of the past are on display, her present is bright and her future is in full bloom.
