Beautiful artwork collaboration created by local artist Chelsea McShane and Arkansas Children's patient Miles, age 10.
ABOUT MILES
After Miles was born, he and his family spent a week in a local neonatal intensive care unit, where they first met his neurologist and pulmonologist from Arkansas Children's Hospital. He was diagnosed with congenital scoliosis associated with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) type VI. Miles has had multiple genetic tests, G-tube surgery and eight spinal surgeries. His parents shared that throughout Miles' treatments and surgeries, their family developed personal friendships with his doctor and nurse, who always went above and beyond. They also say the nurses at Arkansas Children's Northwest bring positive energy to every interaction and provide a calm, safe environment for Miles. Miles has regular follow-up visits with his neurology, pulmonology, cardiology and orthopedics teams. He loves swimming, boat rides, and 70s music, including Queen, the Rolling Stones, Journey and Elton John.
ABOUT THE ART - "Create Joy & Spread Hope"
From the artist: "It was created in collaboration with my sweet nephew, Miles, who has been a patient of Arkansas Children's Hospital since birth. I invited Miles to help me with the piece and asked him to choose a favorite word, verse, or quote to include in the piece. Without hesitation, he chose: "Psalm 100: Shout with joy to the Lord, all the earth!" Mile began the painting with darker colors to represent the difficult times he's endured. Then, he layered brighter, softer colors over and around the darkness. He says the verse shows there is always light beneath the darkness. His vision for the piece is to spread one simple, powerful message: HOPE. Together, we titled the artwork "Create Joy & Spread Hope." I don't speak often on this, but last year I was diagnosed with a stage 2 cancer. Miles has taught me what it means to stay strong, to show grace in the hardest moments, and to ALWAYS hold on to JOY!"
