1On November 18, 1952, after attacking factories and warehouses on the North Korean border, Navy Pilot Royce Williams found himself facing off with seven Soviet MiG-15s over 35 minutes. He shot down four before returning his own crippled aircraft to the carrier from which he'd taken off. At the time, the Soviet Union was not officially involved in the Korean War, and Williams was sworn to secrecy regarding the events of that day. As a result, his heroics went largely unnown. Since the release of documents following the fall of the Soviet Union, there has been a steadily growing base of supporters lobbying for Williams to get the recognition he deserved. That finally happened on January 20, 2023 at the San Diego Air & Space Museum, when Williams received the Navy Cross from the Secretary of Navy Carlos Del Toro in a ceremony that also featured Vice Admiral Kenneth Whitesell (Commander, Naval Air Force), Congressman Darrell Issa (48th Congressional District, Admiral Samuel Paparo (Commander, U.S. Pacific Fleet), and James G. Kidrick (President & CEO of the Museum). The above gentlemen, along with Captain Royce Williams autographed this poster after the ceremony.
