"Painting is a way that I explore the world--events, people, places, ideas, and feelings. It is how I make the unfamiliar familiar. The Red Cross is an organization that I have supported because they respond to critical and urgent needs with lifesaving support, especially to natural disasters. I created Alizarin especially for this benefit auction. Alizarin is a specific hue of the color red. It is derived from a root that is also used to make a dye that serves as a biological receptor in medical procedures and research. I used this duality as an inspiration and explored abstracted imagery influenced by blood cells and images found under a microscope in medical research."
