"Via Lucis is a Latin phrase that translates to 'way of light' and is another name for the Stations of the Resurrection. In 2021, I was commissioned to make a series of images responding to some of these prompts.
How to photograph such a concept that I struggle to reconcile, equally ethereal and physical, poetic and concrete? We can observe all rebirth and renewal around us in the seasons and the rhythms of the earth. I tried to imagine what it might feel like to inhabit a resurrected body. To encounter light again, touch water, walk on the earth and see your shadow.
In this particular image, I constructed a scene that could show what a first glimpse at emerging from a cave might look like - shallow focus, the rods and cones of the eye overwhelmed by gauzy light. This image, cobbled together from multiple photographs, is more as Reynolds Price phrased it 'a serious way of wondering' than any sort of definitive answer to the question." - Dean Berner
