Cliff Lee Artist Biography

Cliff Lee was born in Vienna, Austria, in 1951, where his father was stationed as ambassador. Lee began his education in Taiwan and moved to the United States in 1968 to attend Eastern Mennonite College, where he earned a degree in biology in 1971. He attended medical school in the 1970s at the Hershey Medical Center, Pennsylvania State College, specializing in neurosurgery. After starting work as a physician, and looking to reduce stress after long workdays, Lee enrolled in a ceramics class at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia. It was there that he found the two passions of his life: studio pottery and his future bride, Holly, a jewelry designer. Lee enrolled in the school's ceramics master's program and received his degree in 1976.

With four decades of experience under his belt, Lee stands as a master craftsman in the world of ceramics. From his humble beginnings, Lee has honed his skills, shaping clay into exquisite forms that captivate the imagination. His hands possess an intuitive understanding of the medium, seamlessly translating his vision into tangible works of art. With each piece, Cliff infuses a piece of his soul, creating vessels that speak of timelessness and beauty. Through years of dedication and practice, he has mastered the delicate dance between tradition and innovation, continually pushing the boundaries of his craft. Lee's pottery serves not only as a testament to his talent but also as a bridge connecting past and present, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in the rich tapestry of ceramic artistry.

There is a very similar bowl in the collection of the Smithsonian Museum.
