Artist Statement

My recent paintings explore catenaries. I wanted to create a series of catenary paintings the moment I saw Jasper Johns' assemblages with catenaries in his retrospective at the Philadelphia Museum of art. I wanted to re-interpret this subject and make my own catenaries. It took me a year to finally conceptualize the catenary on my own terms.

A catenary is the resultant curve that forms when you fix a rope or chain at two points. We see catenaries everywhere. The swag of a curtain, overhead power lines, and jump ropes are catenaries. An arch is an upside down catenary that evenly supports and distributes weight.

Artist Bio

Paula Cahill is a contemporary American artist. She is known for her paintings made with color changing lines that are reminiscent of the bioluminescent light that emanates from sea-life at deep, dark depths.

Born in Detroit, Michigan, Paula relocated to the Northeast where she received merit and academic scholarships while pursuing an education in the arts. She holds an MFA from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and a BFA from Tyler School of Art and Architecture.
