Artist Statement

My work presents composite views that honor nature, industry and the course of growth, decay and recovery. Dense compositions seamlessly synthesize acts of observation and imagination, offering a glimpse into the struggle between the natural and built environment. A democratic organization of imagery argues that both can flourish in a symbiotic way.

Each work represents a self-sustaining microcosm, conveying the awe-inspiring stamina and tenacity of nature that is even more poignant in the urban environment. The assembled elements are indigenous, unexotic plants and objects that may also serve as metaphors for the spirit of the post-industrial neighborhood. Castoffs are reworked to transform the common into the precious and evoke the resilience of nature and the human struggle to sustain itself in spite of great obstacles.
