Joseph Opshinsky
Philly Horse Paint by Number, 2025
Cut paper collage
25" x 36"

Artist Statement

On February 20th, 2024, a horse escaped from a riding club in Strawberry Mansion and was later apprehended at the Allegheny Ave exit of Interstate 95 in Port Richmond. This runaway horse, which was seen by early morning traffic on the interstate, is the perfect subject matter for an inspiring equestrian scene as often depicted in classic paint by number kits. The artwork using hand cut paper collage recreates the packaging of a mid-century craft painting kit depicting the improbable run of the horse known as "Freeway" with the Philadelphia skyline as backdrop.
