Artist Statement
"Cyber meets bohemian" has been said to describe my work and I like that! I like that description because it's an intuitive observation that reflects my love and found inspiration in folk textiles from around the world, the techniques used to execute them, and my obsession to push the limits of a well-oiled sewing machine. Having had a sewing machine since the age of 13, but never receiving formal lessons, you can break the rules and hopefully not break the machine while experimenting. And its those experiments that brought me to this moment - pursuing my childhood dream of being a fashion designer, or more specific, a textile designer who hopes to pay homage to the hands of artisans past and present who have opened her eyes to a WORLD of color, shape, texture, technique, and BEAUTY.

Artist Bio

After receiving her BFA in Textile Design from Moore College, Rachel Sherman traded in her east coast lifestyle for a stint in Seattle. It was there, in 2002, that she launched her label "Malagueta", based on sustainability practices and improvised surface manipulation techniques such as applique, couching, shirring, top-stitching, ruching, embroidery, piecing, and pin-tucking. Her inspiration: foliage, architecture, fruits, vegetables, insects, and machinery.
