A one-of-a-kind wall hanging, bringing together our faith, the wisdom of Pope Benedict with a truly unique fabric made by the Shipibo of the Ucayali, the heart of Peru's Amazon rainforest. Shipibo fabrics are known for their geometric patterns, which are believed to represent the people's cosmology, mythology, and spiritual journey. The patterns are also thought to have healing properties and are used in ceremonies.
MDA's Communicaiton Director, Jessica Franks, created the center design with a quote of Pope Benedict 's "A truly Eucharistic Life is a Missionary Life", for the 2024 Eucharistic Congress. This special fabric, and this quote were brought together by MDA Board member, Lynn Powe and a another quilting crafter Kathy Stevens.
A mission that has now been part of the work of Mission Doctors for more than a decade, Santa Clotilde Hospital on the Napo river serves many indigenous people living in over 100 villages up and down the river.
For over 2000 years, the Shipibo indigenous tribes in the Ucayali region of the Amazon River basin have been considered the caretakers of the jungle.
They strive to uphold the wisdom gathered from Millenia of living in the richest and most biodiverse region in the world.
To the Shipibo, there is a oneness that connects all things in the universe. The intricate patterns embroidered on cloths is a song-pattern, used in prayers for wellness, healing and more and the geometrically designs are made up of tiny stitches.
Bringing these two together I believe we can see that the oneness that the Shipibo speak of are in fact true.
