The Lord is my Shephard
Hand-painted small wall hanging from Uganda.
The 23rd Psalm is a psalm of David who was himself a shepherd before becoming king; in the Books of Samuel, it describes him as a young shepherd boy who tended his father's sheep in the fields before being chosen by Samuel to become king of Israel.
This prayer beautifully portrays God as a loving shepherd who cares for his people throughout their lives, providing them with comfort, guidance, and protection, especially during difficult times, with the central image of "green pastures" and "still waters" representing God's abundant provision and peace. Jesus also spoke of the "Good Shepherd" as well to help us see God's love and care.
The LORD is my shepherd;
there is nothing I lack.
In green pastures he makes me lie down;
to still waters he leads me;
he restores my soul.
He guides me along right paths
for the sake of his name.
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil, for you are with me;
your rod and your staff comfort me.
You set a table before me
in front of my enemies;
You anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.e
Indeed, goodness and mercy will pursue me all the days of my life;
I will dwell in the house of the LORD
for endless days.
