St. Bernard of Montjoux is the patron saint of hikers, backpackers, mountain climbers, and alpine skiers. He was born in Italy in 923 and died in 1008. He is known for his charity, hospitality, and courage towards travelers in the Pennine Alps. He established two mountain hospices that helped lost travelers.
More than 8,000 feet above sea level, snowdrifts would blow as high as 40 feet across a crucial passageway in the Alps. This important path, where pilgrims made their way to Rome, was treacherous to cross due to these conditions. That's when a monk named Bernard of Menthon decided to create a hospice that would aid pilgrims who were journeying to Rome - Hospice of St. Bernard.
The four footed St. Bernards we may think of, did assist the monks when these weary journeyers became victims of avalanches, unconscious and trapped below deep drifts of snow.
