Celebrate Codman Farm goodness!
In 2000, Codman Farm volunteers worked with a resettlement agency to provide three South Sudanese teens, "Lost" boys, with housing and employment while they attended Lincoln Sudbury High School. SSEF grew out of these local efforts, and now serves the South Sudanese throughout Massachusetts.
Gratitude to Kit Carmody, who was the Board Chair of the Farm when the boys arrived. His legacy lives on! Carol Cormody has graciously donated a $250 Farm gift certificate in honor of her husband's work, and the Farm has generously gifted four T-Shirts. Celebrate the gift of Codman roots and community!

The Gilo River unframed
This painting reproduction reminds many South Sudanese community members of their crossing of the Gilo River during their exodus from Sudan- Ethiopia in the early 1990's. Fleeing machine gun wielding solders, the children were forced to swim across the Gilo River which was infested with crocodile infested waters. Many did not survive.
Our women are overworked
Victor JalReproductionThe original was bought and donated back to the South Sudanese Enrichment for Families byChris and Nancy Winship in honor of the South Sudanese women. Here the artist presents a double vision of African women's work. A traditional village setting isjuxtaposed against a more abstract rendition of a refugee camp., in front for a mud brick wall.SSEF has tried to reach the painter, Stephanal Thaky without any success. It is believed that hecurrently lives in Kakuma, the refugee camp where he painted the piece of art.Back in the 1990's a young South Sudanese man, Atem Alue, lived in Boston and studied atBrandeis. He went back to the refugee camp each summer and taught art. This is one of thepaintings that was made by one of his students; Atem sold to SSEF 34 paintings that weremade in the refugee camp. Stephen Thakyi
Several South Sudanese Community members speculated that the artist is alluding to the breaking of marriage vows, brought on by years of violent conflict and forced immigration.
The title may also evoke the widespread sense that the United States and the international community have not fulfilled their promises to safeguard the long suffering peoples of Sudan.
Reproduction print - unframed Size: 16" x 24"

SSEF's Silent Auction: Invest in Educational Empowerment
Although we have postponed our 25th Anniversary Celebration till next May, our online auction supports crucial Educational Empowerment Initiatives:
Almost 25 years since the "Lost" boys and girls arrived at Logan Airport - with the belief that "Education is both mother and father" - we maintain our dedication to advancement. We are grateful for your investment in our community!
Early Education: Universal early education is still a dream with limited programs and limited hours. Although some families may be eligible for Head Start or a public program, there are too few spaces and long waiting lists. Since 2018, SSEF has prioritized pre-K education by offering enrollment and tuition assistance to families. Early education is vital to children's success, but is cost-prohibitive. Preschool tuition assistance allows families to take advantage of this crucial enrichment: SSEF funds up to 90% of tuition, capped at $4,000. We project 20 children for 2025-2026.
The academic, social, emotional, and psychological "summer slide" that under resourced children face is significant. Summer programs offer immersive learning experiences that maintain and strengthen skills. SSEF's mission to partner with great summer programs began in 2004. With your investment, forty-five children will access summer enrichment this summer!
Women's Program
The Women's Program assists with continuing education and workforce development. SSEF provides tuition assistance for Driver's Ed, vocational training and education.
All efforts are about empowering women and assisting them with accessing resources.
Many adults strive to improve their employment situations: better pay or shorter commutes. The expense of continuing education is substantial on limited incomes. The tuition assistance enables adults to pursue educational and vocational courses with support for GEDs, Certified Nurse's Assistant Programs and all degree programs. $1500 to $2000 cap per semester.
Families are struggling to make ends meet, and Driver's Education is important, but often an unmanageable extra expense. SSEF wants everyone to be safe and confident in the driver's seat. We pay for half of Driver's Education for all teens, and the full cost for women and the newly arrived.
Participating and competing in sports as a teen requires a great deal of resources. SSEF is looking for more mentors, guidance and financial assistance for our athletes. Financial assistance up to $250 for middle school students and up to $500 for high school students, with a limit of two scholarships per family. The goal is to increase youth participation in sports and boost personal development through physical activity.
