Sherwood Country Club has a rich history of hosting PGA Tour events such as the Shark Shootout, hosted by Greg Norman, as well as the World Challenge, hosted by Tiger Woods. Before the course, the motion-picture industry discovered the area's beauty in the 1920's and 1930's, when the site of what is now Sherwood Country Club became a popular filming location.

Scenes from the feature films Tarzan and Birth of a Nation were filmed here, and the local valley was the location for countless westerns. In more recent film history, the Clubhouse itself has been featured in a number of television shows, such as The Mentalist, commercials, and feature films, including the popular Bridesmaids.

Lake Sherwood, originally Potrero Lake, is the oldest artificial lake in California, and its size is significant - 165 acres. Created in 1904 when the Alturas Dam was built, its name was changed to Lake Sherwood when the surrounding areas used for the 1923 Robin Hood movie became known as "Sherwood Forest" and "Maid Marian Park".
