John Renner took his first photographs with black and white film, many of them candid portraits of people he encountered at home on Long Island and in his many travels.
He spent years in his darkroom drawing out shapes from the shadows to make something elusive into a lasting image.
When he transitioned to digital photography, John applied the techniques he learned in the darkroom to capture the contours, textures, light, and colors of the natural world.
For many years, John worked in a school, first as a social worker and later as the director. His photographs, hung on the walls of his school, promoted an environment that celebrated the joy of learning and camaraderie.
His lifelong work with children who have learning differences led him to volunteer at the ELIJA Farm for learners who have autism, where this photo was taken.
John feels most peaceful in the woods, near water, and in the garden. He has designed many perennial gardens, stone walls, and walkways that keep him close to nature - always ready with his camera. You can view John's photographs at:
